Party Season Starts Now: How UK Salons Should Plan Their Christmas Diary in Autumn 2026

Posted by Hair Hype on

It might still feel like autumn has only just arrived, but for UK salons and barbershops the countdown to party season has already begun. The fortnight before Christmas is, for most salons, the busiest and most profitable stretch of the year. It is also the period that causes the most stress when the diary hasn't been planned properly. The salons that finish December feeling in control are almost always the ones that did the groundwork in late September and October.

Here is a practical guide to getting your Christmas diary, your team and your stock ready while there is still time to do it calmly.

Open your Christmas diary early and tell people

Many salons still wait until November to release December appointments. By then, your regular clients have already started asking, and you have lost weeks of potential pre-booking. Open your December diary now, and make a proper announcement of it: an email to your client list, a pinned post on Instagram and Facebook, a message on your booking app, and a printed sign at reception.

Prioritise your loyal clients. Give existing customers a few days of early access before you open the diary publicly. It rewards loyalty, fills your prime slots with reliable clients first, and creates a sense of urgency that encourages people to commit.

Take deposits on peak appointments

No-shows and late cancellations hurt at any time of year, but in the run-up to Christmas they are particularly painful, because those slots could have been filled several times over. Introduce a booking deposit for all appointments between roughly the 10th and 24th of December, and make the cancellation policy clear at the point of booking.

  • Set the deposit at a meaningful amount, typically 25 to 50 per cent of the service value.
  • Make it non-refundable inside 48 hours, and say so clearly on your website and confirmation messages.
  • Use automated reminders 72 hours and 24 hours before the appointment.
  • Keep a waiting list so any cancelled slot is filled quickly.

Most clients accept deposits readily when they are introduced politely and consistently. It is the salons that apply them inconsistently that run into awkward conversations.

Plan your staffing before you plan your promotions

It is tempting to announce late-night opening and Sunday trading for December before working out who will actually be on the floor. Sit down with your team now and agree the December rota. Be clear about which days the salon will run extended hours, who is covering them, and how time off in lieu or overtime will work.

Consider bringing in extra hands for the peak fortnight: a freelance stylist renting a chair, a former team member happy to do a few shifts, or an apprentice taking on blow-dries and assisting. Your reception also needs cover; a busy December salon with nobody answering the phone is losing bookings every hour.

Build a menu of quick, high-margin party services

December clients want to look polished for work parties, family gatherings and nights out, and many of them want it quickly. Alongside your usual colour and cutting services, put together a short seasonal menu that your team can deliver efficiently:

  • Express blow-dry and finish, with a premium option that includes a treatment.
  • Gloss and toner refreshes for clients between full colour appointments.
  • Occasion styling, such as waves, sleek finishes and simple up-dos.
  • Beard tidy and hot towel finishes for barbering clients.
  • Add-on treatments such as scalp facials and bond-building masks.

Price these services properly. Quick does not mean cheap, and December is not the month for discounting your core services.

Push gift vouchers from November onwards

Gift vouchers are one of the easiest revenue streams in the salon calendar, and they bring new clients through the door in January and February when the diary is quieter. Make sure vouchers are available both in salon and online, promote them from early November, and offer a small incentive such as a complimentary treatment when a voucher above a certain value is purchased. Display them prominently at reception, because plenty of clients will buy one on impulse while paying for their own appointment.

Order your stock now, not in December

Every year, salons find themselves short of essential colour shades, developer, foils, styling products and retail lines in the week before Christmas, at precisely the moment when suppliers are at their busiest and delivery times are longest. Look at last December's usage, add a sensible buffer, and place your main order in October or early November.

Think about the specific products party season demands: strong-hold hairsprays, shine sprays, heat protectants, dry shampoos, toners and glosses, and enough backbar treatment to cover the extra add-on services you are promoting. Retail stock matters too; December is your strongest month for selling gift sets and full-size products, so make sure the shelves are full and well presented.

Look after your team

December is long and tiring. Small things make a big difference: a proper break rota, food in the staff room on late nights, a clear finish time, and a genuine thank-you at the end of the season. A well-supported team delivers better work, sells more retail and is far more likely to still be with you in the new year.
