The September Surge: How UK Salons Can Prepare for the Busiest Month of the Year
Posted by Hair Hype on
Ask any UK salon owner which month keeps them on their feet and September will be near the top of the list. The holidays are over, the schools are back, party season planning begins and clients who let their colour slide over summer are suddenly booking in. For barbers and beauty therapists, it's the same story: the diary fills fast and the quiet weeks of August feel like a distant memory.
The salons that thrive in September are the ones that prepare in August. Here's a practical checklist to get your business ready.
1. Forecast your stock before the rush, not during it
The single most common September mistake is running short on your bread-and-butter lines mid-week with a full column booked. Look back at last September's usage rather than last month's — summer buying patterns are misleading.
- Colour: expect a swing back to richer brunettes, coppers and deep reds as clients move away from summer blondes. Stock your warm and neutral bases accordingly.
- Developer and bleach: root regrowth after a summer of neglect means heavier usage than you might expect.
- Bond builders and treatments: sun, sea and chlorine damage is still working its way through the client base well into October.
- Consumables: foils, tint bowls, gloves, towels, cotton wool. Cheap to hold, expensive to run out of.
2. Rebook before they leave the chair
September is the best rebooking month of the year because clients are back in routine and thinking ahead to Christmas. A simple, consistent script at the till — "shall I pop you in for six weeks' time while I've got the diary open?" — will lift your rebooking rate more than any marketing campaign.
If you're not already tracking your rebooking percentage, start now. Most salons sit somewhere around 40–50%. Pushing it to 65% transforms your December.
3. Review your pricing while demand is strong
With product costs, energy and wages all having moved in recent years, many salons are still working to a price list they set some time ago. September, when demand is high and confidence is up, is a far better moment to adjust prices than January.
Keep it simple: give at least four weeks' notice, update your price list in-salon and online at the same time, and train your team to explain the change confidently rather than apologetically. Small, regular adjustments land far better with clients than one large jump every few years.
4. Get your team ready
Busy months expose gaps in training. Use the last quiet fortnight of August for a team session on the services you expect to sell heavily this autumn — root melts, gloss and toner refreshes, restructuring treatments, brow lamination and lash lifts.
Check your rota too. Late-night openings on Thursdays and Fridays through September and October capture the clients who can't take time off during the working day, and they're an easy way to add capacity without adding chairs.
5. Build your retail display around the season
Retail is the most under-used profit line in most UK salons. Autumn gives you an obvious story to sell: repair after summer, protect colour investment, prepare for party season.
- Group products into a clear seasonal display rather than scattering them by brand.
- Give every stylist two products to recommend that month — focus beats choice overload.
- Order Christmas gift sets and festive lines in September. The best sellers are typically gone by mid-November.
6. Tidy up the admin now
Chase outstanding trade account paperwork, check your insurance and patch-testing records are current, and make sure your online booking system reflects your autumn hours. These are ten-minute jobs in August and half-day headaches in October.
Make September work for you
A busy month is only profitable if you're stocked, staffed and priced correctly going into it. Spend a couple of hours this week on the list above and you'll spend September serving clients rather than firefighting.
